Nesta Admits Italy Worries, Praises 'Super' Bastoni Amidst Play-off Pressure

Italian football icon Alessandro Nesta shares his thoughts on the upcoming World Cup play-off final against Bosnia and Herzegovina, offering his full support to defender Alessandro Bastoni, even admitting, "I simulated many times in my career."

The Azzurri faced a tough challenge in their World Cup play-off semi-final against Northern Ireland in Bergamo, taking over 55 minutes to break the deadlock. Goals from Sandro Tonali and Moise Kean secured a 2-0 victory, setting the stage for a decisive final match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Tuesday evening in Zenica.

Nesta Anxious as an Italy Supporter

Speaking on Sky Sport Italia, Nesta admitted, "I too got worried in the first half." He elaborated on the unique pressure of playing for Italy: "While Italy's inherent quality should differentiate them from play-off opponents like Northern Ireland or Bosnia, the burden of wearing the national jersey is immense. The visible tension among the Azzurri clearly impacted their first-half performance."

Given the draw, the play-off final will take place in Bosnia and Herzegovina, guaranteeing an intense atmosphere. Nesta cautioned, "We must be well aware that it’s going to be a lot tougher in Bosnia. Not only will we be playing away from home amidst their passionate supporters, but Bosnia is also a stronger team than Northern Ireland, who, frankly, didn't impress me much."

Ahead of the semi-final, concerns arose that Alessandro Bastoni might face continued backlash from fans. He had been a target of criticism after admitting to simulation, which led to Juventus player Pierre Kalulu's sending off against Inter. Some even suggested Bastoni should be dropped from the Italy squad for this perceived unsporting conduct, but Nesta firmly disagrees with such calls.

Nesta expressed his strong support for Bastoni: "I have to congratulate Bastoni. Despite facing immense pressure regarding that simulation and not being fully fit yesterday due to an injury, he played a great game." He continued, defending the player's actions: "I always had a reputation for being a fair player, but I too simulated many times in my career. I'll never lecture Bastoni on morality; he's super in my eyes." However, Nesta noted a tactical observation: "Admittedly, he is less able to fully utilize his attacking attributes when deployed centrally in a back three formation."
