Meret: ‘Italy are ready’ for Bosnia and 2026 World Cup play-off

Italian goalkeeper Alex Meret has affirmed the squad's readiness for this evening's crucial World Cup play-off final against Bosnia and Herzegovina, emphasizing that "every moment could prove decisive."

The match is scheduled to commence at 19:45 UK time (18:45 GMT, 20:45 CEST) at the Stadion Bilino Polje in Zenica.

Following their 2-0 semi-final triumph over Northern Ireland, where Sandro Tonali and Moise Kean scored, manager Gennaro Gattuso has opted to retain the same starting lineup for this fixture.

Meret Highlights Italy's Preparedness

Speaking to RAI Sport and Sky Sport Italia, Meret stated, "The time has come; we are prepared, fully aware that facing a formidable Bosnian side will be no simple task." He continued, "While it will be a challenging encounter, our readiness is unwavering, and we are determined to secure a vital outcome. Given that any instant could be pivotal, maintaining the right mindset and attention to detail is crucial. Our strategy is to start strongly and earn the desired result."

Bosnia and Herzegovina faced a grueling 120-minute contest in Cardiff on Thursday. A late equalizer from Edin Dzeko pushed their semi-final against Wales into extra time, ultimately leading to a penalty shoot-out win. Bosnia's sole previous appearance in the World Cup finals was in 2014.

Meret further elaborated on the team's cohesion, saying, "We possess the necessary focus and a collective drive to support one another. Our unity for this goal is palpable, and I believe we have cultivated an excellent atmosphere." He acknowledged the significance of the upcoming game: "Having been with the national team for a considerable period, I've experienced many situations, but never a match of this paramount importance.
