Fikayo Tomori Returns to England Squad, Benefiting from Chalobah's Injury
Fikayo Tomori, the AC Milan defender, has been named in the England squad for the upcoming friendly matches in March. Thomas Tuchel, his former coach at Chelsea, acknowledged that Tomori's inclusion "benefits" from an injury sustained by fellow defender Trevoh Chalobah.
The Milan centre-back is poised to participate in England's international friendlies against Uruguay and Japan.
Tuchel Discusses Tomori’s Call-Up
Tomori last featured in a competitive match for England in November 2023, making this call-up his return to the national team setup.
Thomas Tuchel elaborated on the situation: "Fikayo Tomori benefits from the injury of Trevoh Chalobah. Trevoh unfortunately got injured in the last minutes of the Champions League match, and we hope that he comes back soon, but it looks like a nasty and painful one. This gives Fikayo the chance to come and impress. I've been in contact with him throughout the year and was impressed very early on by his physicality and defensive approach, so I'm happy to have him in camp."
Tomori, a former Chelsea player, has earned five senior caps for the England national team, debuting in 2019 against Kosovo under the management of Gareth Southgate.
The 28-year-old has been a consistent starter for AC Milan over the past few seasons. In the current campaign, he has made 30 appearances across all competitions, providing three assists.
In a recent interview with The Athletic, Tomori disclosed that he had spoken with Tuchel and expressed his ambition to be part of England's World Cup squad in June.
