Chivu's Reassurance: Bastoni's Commitment to Inter Amidst Transfer Rumors

Inter coach Cristian Chivu has hinted at a potential departure for Alessandro Bastoni, possibly to Barcelona, following recent controversies. Despite transfer speculation, Chivu remains confident in Bastoni's dedication, stating, “I'm sure he will give over 100 percent for us, whether it's for two months or a couple of years.”

The recent international break brought disappointment for several Inter players, with five returning after Italy's failure to qualify for the World Cup. Defender Alessandro Bastoni, in particular, faced significant media and fan backlash for receiving a red card during Italy's World Cup play-off final against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Chivu Supports Bastoni Through Difficulties

During a press conference, Chivu expressed his faith in his players, describing them as “great champions, especially on a human level,” who consistently recover from setbacks. He emphasized that being part of the squad means learning from failures and prioritizing character, reaction, and commitment to teammates and the club. Chivu added that even supporters understand that disappointment is inherent in the sport, and he trusts his team, noting, “I am not worried, because in these eight months they showed that this is a group of real men who I can trust.”

Bastoni had already been a target of jeers from rival fans after admitting to simulating a foul to get Juventus' Pierre Kalulu sent off, leading to calls for his exclusion from the Italy squad. The red card against Bosnia only intensified this criticism.

Chivu continued, stating that the players have “learned from the errors of the past” and consistently show resilience. He specifically mentioned Bastoni, highlighting that despite being on crutches recently, he was training with the national team just three days later. Chivu lamented football's “lack of gratitude,” where people are quick to blame without considering an individual's true character. He stressed that respect for teammates, work ethic, and personal values are paramount. Bastoni, though saddened by the incident, appreciated the support from both his national and club teammates.

Chivu praised Bastoni for taking responsibility and giving his utmost to represent his country during a challenging period, even when not fully fit, earning the respect of his peers.

When asked about advice for Bastoni, Chivu replied, “I just have to help him feel calm and confident.” While acknowledging he cannot control Bastoni's future, Chivu affirmed the player's happiness within the squad. He reiterated that Bastoni's decisions about his future are his own, just like everyone else's. However, Chivu confidently stated, “while he is here, I’m sure he will give over 100 per cent for us, whether it’s for two months or a couple of years.”

Chivu added that he would be pleased if both he and Bastoni remained at Inter, recognizing football's inherent uncertainty. Regardless of Bastoni's choice, Chivu believes the football world will continue to admire his exceptional talent.

Bastoni was not the only Inter player criticized for Italy's performances; Federico Dimarco and Francesco Pio Esposito also faced scrutiny. Chivu defended his players, asserting, “It isn’t the fault of the Inter players if the Nazionale failed.” He emphasized the importance of giving one's best, regardless of the outcome. Chivu particularly highlighted young Pio Esposito's courage in stepping up to take a penalty in a crucial match, noting, “He will miss many more penalties in his career, I’m sure, but the important thing is to have courage and step up.” He considered this willingness a positive sign for both Inter and the national team.
